Praefatio
Salutem vobis discipulis linguae Latinae dico,
I have constructed this site in order to assist the students of the
Latin language at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. When complete,
it is my intention that this on-line grammar, although it is not intended
to be exhaustive, will allow the student to identify and generate any part
of speech in any conjugated or declined form in order to facilitate their
translation of Latin text. In addition, grammatical explanations, examples,
and tutorials will provided the student with a reference for all material
inclusive of Latin 2003: Petronius.
The site is divided into four sections:
- Praefatio: introductory notes on pronunciation and English parts
of speech.
- Res Grammaticae: grammatical notes on topics such as: case usage,
indirect speech, co-ordination & subordination, and uses of the subjunctive.
- Partes Orationis: explanations of the various
parts of speech and forms with complete paradigms, showing all forms.
- Regulae: guides for the identification of forms, linked to paradigms
in the Partes Orationis section.
NOTA BENE: vowels that are LONG by NATURE are set off in BOLD TYPE throughout
this site. The QUANTITY, whether a vowel is long or short, is an important
means of identifying a form, and is vital to the study of poetic forms.
